What does BMI mean?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a more reliable indicator of body fat than weight. BMI is one way of measuring your health risk, because excess weight and /or body fat can lead to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other diseases. Other factors that are also important to your health include your daily diet, exercise level, waist measurement, blood pressure reading, family history of disease, smoking status, and levels of blood sugar and cholesterol. BMI is not a diagnostic tool, but it is used as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems in adults.

Obesity is a public health matter. About 64% of adults and 15% of children are overweight or obese. The reasons for these high percentages are complex, but genetics, culture, social status, and levels of blood sugar and cholesterol all play a role.
